After beating Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia in the final of the 2009 Asian Club Championship, Paykan made their Club World Championship debut later that year. They qualified for the bronze medal match after losing their semifinal to Italian side Trentino, but were defeated in straight sets by Zenit Kazan of Russia. In 2010 Paykan returned to the premier club competition and finished third. After finishing second in their pool behind PGE Skra Belchatow, Paykan met Trentino in the semifinals and again lost to the Italians. In the bronze medal match they went two sets down against Argentinian side Drean Bolivar before a remarkable recovery concluded with the Iranians winning the fifth set 15-13. Their most recent appearance was in 2011, when they lost all three matches and finished joint-fifth overall.

Paykan Tehran are Iran’s most successful club with 12 league titles to their name, including this year’s triumph. The club won their first title in the old first division in 1997 and since the competition was renamed as the Super League they have won 11 of the 18 editions. They are also the most decorated club in Asia, as they have won the Asian Club Championships a record seven times. Their first title was in 2002 and they also triumphed in the tournament every year between 2006 and 2011. Paykan Tehran Volleyball Club was established as part of Paykan Sport Club in 1969.
