UPCN have competed in each of the last two Club World Championships and qualify as South American champions due to a five-set win against Sada Cruzeiro. Last year they reached the semifinal stage before losing 3-1 to Russian side Belgorod, who went on to win the gold medal. In the bronze medal match they again played Sada Cruzeiro and lost a two-set lead before recovering to win the fifth set. The bronze medal they won made them the most successful Argentinian team in the competition’s history. In their only other appearance, Sada Cruzeiro were their semifinal opponents in 2013, but the Argentinians lost 3-0 before going down 3-1 to Trentino in the battle for third.
In this season’s Liga Argentina, UPCN finished with 15 wins and three defeats. In the play-offs they beat La Union de Formosa and Lomas Voley before despatching Bolivar in a five-match final series. Bulgarian Nikolay Uchikov was the league’s top scorer with 538 points and he was also the best server with 45 aces. In all competitions they went on a 19-game winning run. In addition to this year’s win, UPCN won league titles in 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13. At international level, they have featured in each of the last five South American Championship gold medal matches, with wins coming in 2013 and 2015. The UPCN San Juan Volleyball Club was founded in 2007.
